CHARACTER

Name: Minako Aino
Canon: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (2003 live action series)
Age: 14
History:
Minako's early childhood is never shown, but her parents seem to be entirely absent from her life by the time we meet her in canon. What is known about her is that she released her first album as an idol singer in late 2002, at the age of 13. The chaos of an idol's life already isolated her from most girls her age, but her special destiny was only beginning.

On Christmas Eve 2002, Minako was singing to herself on a city roof. Her peace was interrupted when a small stuffed white cat with a crescent moon on his forehead fell from the sky, landing on her face. The stuffed cat, somehow able to speak and move around, introduced himself as Artemis. He had been searching for Minako for a while.

Frustrated by Minako's goofing around, Artemis skipped the explanation and activated a small magical phone, transforming her into the modern era's first Sailor Senshi, Sailor V. She now wore a superhero's costume: short sailor uniform and red mask. Artemis sent her into her first battle against a petty thief, and though she stumbled, she was victorious. Standing alone with Artemis, she told him the power of the Sailor Senshi was the best Christmas present ever.

Minako continued her double life as an idol singer and Sailor V alone for most of 2003, largely apprehending thieves in her powered form by night and performing as an idol singer by day. It was fun at first, but her situation began to take a turn for the worse that autumn.

Youma, powerful monsters sent by the evil Queen Beryl, began to attack Tokyo, and they were too strong for Sailor V to handle on her own. To deal with the crisis, another stuffed cat appeared: Artemis's past companion, Luna. She awakened four more Sailor Senshi to fight: Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter. The four new Senshi soon became close friends and teammates, fighting the youma with occasional assistance from Sailor V.

Worse yet, Minako was diagnosed with a terminal illness, though the exact nature of it was never explicitly identified in canon. She had less than a year to live, less than a year to complete her mission and save the world. With time running out, she needed to get involved: she shed her Sailor V alias for her true form as Sailor Venus, an upgrade that came with a costume color change and stronger light-based powers. She introduced herself as the leader of the Sailor Senshi.

Unlike the other four Sailor Senshi, Minako had vivid memories of her past: Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus had been guardians of the Moon Princess in a past life. Sailor Moon had been the princess, Serenity, in love with Prince Endymion of Earth. When Endymion died in battle, Serenity's grief unleashed a power that destroyed the moon and killed them all. It became Minako's mission to help the other four Senshi recover their memories of the past. With that knowledge, they could prevent the past tragedy from happening again.

Saddled with the terminal diagnosis, Minako became fully absorbed by the urgency of the mission. Though the other Sailor Senshi continued to enjoy their lives as junior high girls between battles, Minako based her whole identity around her mission as Sailor Venus. She didn't have time to be a friend to the other girls: the other four often congregated at their secret base or did things together around town, but Minako never joined them outside the battlefield. She preferred to keep an eye on the others from a distance, usually sending Artermis as her representative when she needed to give a message to the others. Loneliness was the best path for Sailor Venus.

Despite her efforts to remain distant, the other girls began to win her over. The first Senshi she encountered was Usagi, an enthusiastic fan of Minako-chan the pop idol. When Minako learned that Usagi was Sailor Moon, the Princess, she could hardly believe it: how could such a silly and immature girl be the princess she swore to protect? Over time, Usagi revealed more of herself: she loved her friends deeply and she was always willing to fight beside them. Minako had to admire the girl's strong heart. Usagi was her princess, she would be protected.

This became more difficult when Usagi began to fall in love with Mamoru, a young man and comrade who was the reincarnated form of Prince Endymion. Their love was ill-fated, but despite Minako's best efforts to keep them apart, the couple persevered. Minako's despair eventually faded into acceptance. Perhaps it could end well this time, and the power of love would win after all.

Over the course of the mission, Minako was closest with Sailor Mars, a young miko named Rei. For a long time, Rei was the only Sailor Senshi who knew Venus's identity. Minako hand-picked Rei to be Venus's successor as leader of the Sailor Senshi, and the two challenged each other to be better warriors---Minako would call Rei irresponsible, Rei would call Minako reckless. Minako focused on warning Rei about the perils of allowing the past life to repeat itself, but Rei soon began to resist. Living in the present had its importance too, she argued.

Their conflict bubbled up again as Minako's illness progressed: soon, she only had two months left to live. At this stage, she heard news of an experimental surgery that had a chance of saving her, but she initially refused. If she was going to die, she would be the perfect weapon in the battle against the youma, and the recovery time would impede her fighting as Venus.

Minako's decision to give up her idol career in favor of spending her last months fighting as Venus was the straw that broke Rei's back. Rei became an idol and challenged Minako to a competition, urging Minako to fight for her place as a top idol. Minako was drawn into a playful game show with the other Sailor Senshi, and for once, all five girls had fun together.

After Minako's next song recording, she met Rei again. Rei urged Minako to get the surgery, insisting that even a small chance of surviving was worth it. Minako snapped at Rei again, insisting that the mission was more important than all else, but Rei's attempt to stress the importance of their present lives had hit her. That afternoon, Minako cried for all she'd lost. Was loneliness the only path for Minako?

Point in canon: Post Act 40, when she first has a day of fun with the other Sailor Senshi and realizes life can be more than missions and war. At this point she has six weeks left to live before her illness kills her, so she'll have to have surgery or a magical healing soon. She's still able to function fairly well right up until her death, she just has dizzy spells and tires more easily.

Window Location: In an abandoned warehouse in the Juuban district of Tokyo. Minako stumbled through while investigating a possible monster appearance on her own.

Universe: Earth circa 2004. Functionally identical to the Earth of the real world, with the minor addition of weekly monster attacks due to an alien invasion.

Abilities: With the power of the silver bracelet she wears, she instantaneously transforms into Sailor Venus. She's an agile warrior who largely fights with flips and kicks in this form, but she relies on three main attacks: a sharp crescent-shaped compact boomerang that slices through thick rope when thrown, a beam of light shot from her fingers, and the magically-extending chain of her belt, used like a whip. She's not really more physically powerful than an ordinary human, but she does have cool toys.

Possessions: The silver charm bracelet that allows her to transform into Sailor Venus.

Personality: As an idol singer, Minako is kind to her fans, especially the young ones who are as sick as she is. When she's meeting with doctors in the hospital, she always stops to sing to a young fan, happy to meet her. It's one of Minako's few joys in life, bringing smiles to people when she can. If her duties and illness hadn't interfered, this likely would have been a big part of her life.

As a Sailor Senshi, she bears the burden of urging the others to remember their pasts before she dies. Knowing that her death is imminent, she can't risk compromising their performance in battle by befriending them. She is often strict with the other girls, always ordering them to do better, to remember. Her illness and duty have forced her to mature early.

Between her two lives, Minako rarely spends time living as a middle school girl. When she's forced into situations of friendly competition or casual human interaction with the other Senshi, she comes across as awkward, even shy. She knows how to handle fans (like Usagi) and comrades (like Rei), but friends are new territory. When Usagi and Rei want to treat her as a friend, it usually ends in an explosive conflict and hurt feelings. She might have coped with other people better before becoming an idol or a Sailor Senshi, but she's clearly out of practice.

Beneath all the masks she wears, though, there are hints of a fun and playful girl in Minako. She confides most often in Artemis: the cat is the only being she can truly share everything with. She teases him and plays pranks, often tricking Artemis into opening a box that contains a puppet ready to spring out! If her burdens were removed, Minako might begin to grow into a person more like this---closer to the playful, carefree, and bubbly Minako seen in the other versions of Sailor Moon canon.

I'll be in pain forever, but my tears are gone.

The familiar lyrics jumped into Minako's mind with unsettling ease as she walked through the hospital corridors, and she caught herself singing them. No, she needed to stop---unless she wanted a herd of adoring fans squealing for her. 'Minako-chan, Minako-chan!'

It must be wonderful, being so free. She was almost envious, but she'd learned to stop wasting time on what-ifs and regrets long ago. It was almost never productive. What was the point of mourning the life she'd missed out on? It wouldn't help her complete her mission.

She pulled her coat tighter around herself as she entered the lobby. The doctors had assured her that chills were normal at this stage of the illness, but it bothered her. Though she tried to assure herself that it was for the best, there was still a small part of her that feared death. Would it hurt? Would she be at peace?

It occurred to Minako that she'd been out of the loop for the past few days in the hospital. She needed to catch up on the news. Ah, there was an elderly man with a newspaper. He was perfect: older folks were far less likely to be concerned with the world of pop idols. She was just another young thing to him, not Minako-chan. She approached, lowering her ever-present shades and smiling hesitantly.

"Excuse me, sir? Can you tell me the news? I'd like to know what's happening. I've been busy."

The man lowered his newspaper, staring at the young teenager standing in front of him. No one ever approached him these days. But she seemed honest enough, and it had been a while since he'd had someone to talk to.

"Well, young lady, there's not much to tell. The monster attacks are getting worse, it's all anyone talks about. That's why I'm here. My wife's in surgery. She got hit last night."

Minako gasped. She had been there, as Venus: Artemis had tried to stop her from sneaking out, but the other Sailor Senshi needed her. If she hadn't been there, Jupiter would have become part of the concrete---but an old woman who must've been this man's wife hadn't been so lucky. Venus had flung her chain around the youma to catch him, but she was too late to stop the creature from slamming into the woman. Venus had needed Mars's help to pull her out.

It was her fault. They rarely spoke to the citizens being affected by this war from the past life, and now she knew why. She bowed her head.

"I'm sorry," Minako whispered after a pause. "The monster attacks haven't been easy on anyone. I hope she recovers soon." But she couldn't relate: she had no close friends or family who were at risk, only the other Senshi---and she couldn't tell him about that!

"I have faith," the older man said. "Our marriage has weathered worse. It will all work itself out, right?"

"I hope so," Minako replied. She couldn't bring herself to lie and say yes, not with all the terrible things that had already happened in the world, but the man's words had touched her. Have faith. It was the same sort of hope she expressed in her songs. "Go to her as soon as you can."

Just then, a nurse with a clipboard poked her head into the lobby. "Miura-san, you may follow me."

The old man, Miura-san, stood. He passed his newspaper into Minako's hands. "I'm going now. Thank you."

Minako watched him go, looking thoughtful. With a wish that the Miura family would endure this, she departed the lobby, finishing the song under her breath.

Because I'll love you forever, I won't show my tears.

Plans: The first and most important thing is to find a cure for her illness. She dies and is resurrected and cured in canon, but that would complicate things here.

After that, I want her to begin to learn how to interact with people. There will still be battles, but she should develop into her own person: Minako Aino, not just Sailor Venus. The beginnings of her character development were seen in the series, but she died before she really had a chance to apply the lessons she was beginning to learn about friendship.

DÆMON

Name: Adonis
Sex: Male
Form: Luzon Bleeding-heart Pigeon
Additional notes:
Why this form: A bird form is ideal because it represents Minako's wish to be free: for the past year or so, she's been caged in by both her Sailor Senshi duties and her illness. More specifically, the pigeon's most distinctive feature is the red mark on its chest, the 'bleeding heart'. The mark represents the pain in Minako's heart: she's a soldier and sworn to duty above all else, but as the child of Venus she's meant to love. Having an open heart is a luxury she was refused.
